Download Contact Sensor Processing for Acoustic Instrument Sensor Matching Using a Modal Architecture
This paper proposes a method to filter the output of instrument contact sensors to approximate the response of a well placed microphone. A modal approach is proposed in which mode frequencies and damping ratios are fit to the frequency response of the contact sensor, and the mode gains are then determined for both the contact sensor and the microphone. The mode frequencies and damping ratios are presumed to be associated with the resonances of the instrument. Accordingly, the corresponding contact sensor and microphone mode gains will account for the instrument radiation. The ratios between the contact sensor and microphone gains are then used to create a parallel bank of second-order biquad filters to filter the contact sensor signal to estimate the microphone signal.
Download Improved Carillon Synthesis
An improved and expanded method for carillon bell synthesis is proposed. Measurements of a carillon bell and its clapper were made to serve as the basis for an efficient synthesis framework. Mode frequencies, damping, and amplitudes are used to form a modal model fit to measurements. A parameterized clapper interaction model is proposed to drive the bell model, reproducing variation of timbre as the bell is played in different dynamic ranges. Reverberation of the belfry was measured from several listener perspectives and an efficient modal reverberation architecture is shown to model the sound of the bell from locations inside and outside the belfry.
Download Water Bottle Synthesis With Modal Signal Processing
We present a method for accurately synthesizing the acoustic response of a water bottle using modal signal processing. We start with extensive measurements of two water bottles with considerations for how the level of water inside the bottles, the area covered by stickers attached to the exterior of the bottles, and the method of striking the bottles affect their sound. We perform modal analysis of these measurements and implement a real-time modal water bottle synthesizer.
